Certification

Do I have to have Praxis exams for Louisiana certification? Yes, Praxis exams are required for Louisiana certification. NTE exams completed prior to September 1, 1999 are also accepted for certification purposes. Other exams (such as TExES/ExCET, CBEST/CSET, FTCE, NYSTCE, etc.) are not accepted for Louisiana certification. There are waivers & exclusions in place for the following cases:
  • An ACT composite score of 22 or greater will waive the Pre-Professional Skills Tests in Reading, Writing, & Math (Praxis I). You are still required to take your content exam(s) and pedagogy (Praxis II).
  • A combined "verbal" & "math" score of 1030 or greater on the SATwill waive the Pre-Professional Skills Tests in Reading, Writing, & Math (Praxis I). You are still required to take your content exam(s) and pedagogy (Praxis II).The ACT/SAT scores must be verified and presented to the certification office in one of the following ways: -Original score report -University Dean/Chair of Education or Registrar may verify on university letterhead stationery -Private Practitioner Teacher Provider Director or authorized designee may verify on letterhead stationery and include a copy of the score report -On an official transcript from a regionally accredited university
  • A masters degree awarded/conferred prior to enrolling in an alternative teacher certification program can waive the Pre-Professional Skills Tests in Reading, Writing, & Math (Praxis I) for candidates enrolling in one of Louisiana's alternative certification programs. This waiver is not permitted for those wanting to obtain a Temporary Authority to Teach (TAT) certificate or for those coming to Louisiana as an out-of-state applicant who already has completed his/her certification program.
  • You can be issued a Louisiana 3-year OS (Out-of-State) certificate while you complete Praxis exams. An out-of-state candidate may be excluded from having to complete all Praxis exams for certification purposes (although some exams may be required for "Highly Qualified" purposes) if all of the following is met: -Teacher has at least 3 years of teaching experience in another state, -Teacher teaches on the Out-of-State (OS) certificate for 1 year in Louisiana, AND -The teacher's employing Louisiana school district (public or approved private school) must verify all experience and submit the application page of certification update packet along with the experience verification form, professional conduct form, & certification fee for the higher level certificate.
